William Apes was a native American Indian, ordained Methodist minister, writer and activist of the Pequot tribe. William Elisha Apes who ended up in NZ was either his son or much younger brother. He arrived on the Ajax, but mutinied and had the ship put into Port Otago where he loaded a whaleboat and deserted in 1838. The next mention is 1844 when he married Mana Punahere of Ngai Tahu and they had 6 or 7 children (again records are sketchy). There is a photo of their son giant James (Tiemi) Apes on: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/photograph/456/tiemi-apes-beside-a-whale-boat. William Apes is buried in Karitane.
250ml Sistema. Either start or finish of a series of caches through Apes Rd. Gravel road, can take an ordinary car through. Places to pull over at side of road near caches, but please take care with sharp bends. Lovely views for most of the way.
