Spiral Stela, a brilliant new work created by Canadian artist Peter Powning, was unveiled August 25, 2013. The work is comprised of a tall stainless stela obelisk with a cast bronze spiral made from imprints of items collected from local residents – a process Peter calls Cultural Mulch. More than 200 objects from residents were incorporated into the work, which was installed in front of The Burlington Performing Arts Centre.
The 3,000-pound, 17-foot-high sculpture that is two-and-half feet wide at its base is primarily made of stainless steel, with a strip of bronze featuring the impressions of community items wrapped around it.
The funding for Spiral Stela came from two sources. Dan Lawrie, a downtown Burlington resident and businessman donated $37,500, while the city contributing $75,000.
“What I’ve seen in communities I’ve worked with is a strong desire to say, ‘This is who we are,’” Powning said. “This isn’t something that is going to be somewhere else — this is going to be defined by the people in this community.”
