55. Den Grooten Oorlog : Slag aan de Yser :

In 2014 wordt het begin van WO I herdacht. Bij deze gelegenheid zullen wij een nieuwe reeks caches uitbrengen, dit langs de volledige frontlijn, van Nieuwpoort tot Mesen.
Ze worden onderverdeeld in verschillende 'veldslagen'. Elke veldslag bestaat uit 8 gebeurtenissen, met aan het eind een bonus. Iedere reeks bestaat uit korte multi's of tradi's.
Het is de bedoeling dat met een tussenperiode van 1 à 2 maanden een volgende veldslag 'uitgevochten' wordt.
Denk er aan : ook al ligt een gedenkteken of begraafplaats schijnbaar midden de velden, er steeds een zeer goed onderhouden pad naartoe loopt.
De caches liggen nergens verborgen op de begraafplaatsen.. De antwoorden op de vragen moeten wel regelmatig op de begraafplaatsen gezocht worden. Respecteer de stilte, aub. Maak je ook het napluizen van de aanwezige registers eigen. Je zal ze hier en daar nodig hebben.
Gelieve GEEN gebruik te maken van stickers in de logboekjes. Breng aub eigen schijfgerief mee en noteer vooral de aanwezige codes. Je zal ze nog nodig hebben !

Historiek
In het N van de Ieperboog, bij Merkem, was het terrein vlak, maar grondig omgewoeld door de gevechten van de Derde Slag om Ieper in 1917. De enige vaste grond was het kruispunt van de wegen Diksmuide-Steenstrate en Merkem-Houthulst, 'De Kippe'. De Belgen hadden sinds de winter van 1917 de Fransen in deze zone vervangen.
Luitenant-Generaal Jacques had de verantwoordelijkheid over deze zone. Hij verdeelde zijn 3de Legerdivisie over 2 sectoren: Drie Grachten (9e Infanteriedivisie: 14e Linie, 1e Jagers te voet) en Steenstrate (3e Infanteriedivisie: 9e, 11e en 12e Linie). De bijgekomen sector Bikschote werd bemand door de 10de Infanteriedivisie (19e en 13e Linie). Tegenover hen 23 bataljons van de 6e Beierse Legerdivisie, de 1e Landwehrdivisie en een regiment Fusiliers Marins. De Duitse artillerie had de stellingen van Draaibank en Wijdendrift geteisterd, waar de Belgische 3e en 10e Infanteriedivisies bij elkaar aansloten. Daar greep dan ook op 17 april de eerste infanterieaanval plaats.
Maar de zozeer verhoopte doorbraak volgde niet. De Belgische mitrailleurs hadden een gemakkelijke prooi aan de opeenvolgende golven Beieren die door de moerassen van de Corverbeek en de samenvloeiing van Broenbeek en Steenbeek baggerden. In de drogere sector De Kippe slaagden de Beieren erin het kruispunt te veroveren. Ze konden zelfs nog verder doorstoten. Op het ogenblik dat de aanval verslapte om de nieuwe stellingen uit te bouwen, begon generaal Jacques zijn tegenaanval, met alle beschikbare krachten, met handgranaat en bajonet. De Kippe kwam weer in Belgische handen. Het slagveld lag bezaaid met duizenden Duitse en Belgische doden.
Opperbevelhebber Foch kwam de Belgische 3e en de Legerdivisies persoonlijk feliciteren. Generaal Plumer van het 2e Britse leger seinde zijn gelukwensen. Koning Albert schonk de Leopoldsorde aan de vaandels van het 9e Linie en het 1e Jagers te Voet. En aan alle regimenten die aan de slag hadden deelgenomen, gaf hij het recht de naam Merckem in hun vaandels te dragen.

2014 is the year we commemorate the start of World War I. At this occasion we publish a series of new caches, alongside the Belgian frontline, from Nieuwpoort to Mesen.
They are subdivided in different “battles”. Each battle consists of 8 events, with at the end a bonus. Each series consists of short multi’s or tradi’s.
Remember: although a memorial or cemetery may be located in the middle of the fields, a well maintained walking path leads always to the site.
The caches are never hidden at the cemeteries. The answers to the questions are mostly found at the cemeteries. Please keep your silence. Also accustom yourself to explore the registers.
Please DO NOT USE stickers in the logbooks. Bring along your own pen and note the present codes. You’ll need them.

History
In the North of the Ypres Salient, in Merkem, the terrain was flat, but thoroughly churned by the battles of the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917. The only solid ground was found at the junction of the roads Diksmuide-Steenstrate and Merkem-Houthulst: de Kippe. Since the winter of 1917 the Belgians replaced the French in this zone.
Lieutenant-General Jacques was responsible for this area. He divided his 3rd Army division in two sectors: one at the three canals (9th Infantry division, 14th Line and the 1st hunters on foot) and one at Steenstrate (3rd Infantry Division: the 9th, 11th and 12th Line). The added Bikschote sector was manned by the 10th Infantry Division (19th and 13th Line). Facing them were 23 battalions of the 6th Bavarian Army division, the 1st Landwehr Division and a regiment of Fusiliers Marines. The German artillery had ravaged the positions in Draaibank and Wijdendrift, where the Belgian 3rd and 10th Infantry Divisions joined up. On April 17, the first infantry attack took place.
But the much hoped breakthrough did not happen. The Belgian guns had an easy prey on the successive waves of the Bavarian soldiers, dredging through the marshes of the Corverbeek and the confluence of the Broenbeek and Steenbeek. In the drier sector de Kippe the Bavarians managed to conquer the junction. They even pushed through. The moment the attacks slackened, General Jacques began his counterattack with all available forces with grenades and bayonets. De Kippe came back into Belgian hands. The battlefield was littered with thousands of German and Belgian bodies.
Commander Foch, personally congratulated, the 3rd and the Belgian Army divisions. General Plumer of the 2nd British Army telegraphed his congratulations. King Albert I gave the Order of Leopold to the banners of the 9th Line and the 1st Foot Chasseurs. And all the regiments that participated in the battle were granted the privilege to wear the name Merkem on their banners.
