Geocache Description:

A simple cache placement to bring you close to the routes of the voyageurs of the North West Fur Trading Company.

Early 17th Century French Explorers Samuel de Champlain and Robert de La Salle traveled from the St. Lawrence River, up the Ottawa River and along the Mattawa in search of trade routes to the Pacific. The Mattawa River proved to be difficult to navigate with over 40 sets of rapids and chutes along it's course.
In the years that followed, the Mattawa River was utilized as a major travel route by the French-Canadian fur traders of the North West Company. After the decline of the fur trade, the mighty Mattawa was used in the logging industry as a route to move logs from the interior forests to mills at Fort Témiscamingue along the Ottawa River at the Ontario-Quebec border.

Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park covers an area of more than 25.5 km² and spans both sides of the Mattawa River. The park is classified as a Natural Environment park and is used for camping, paddling, hiking, fishing and swimming. The park is host to the Voyageur Heritage Centre which operates an interactive interpretive museum and on-water Voyageur paddling adventures led by historically-accurate costumed interpreters. The Federally run Canadian Ecology Centre is also located on the grounds of Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park. This centre runs Ecology and Forestry related credit-granting educational programing at both the Secondary and Post-Secondary levels.
