WELCOME TO GRANITE PIER and the KEYSTONE BRIDGE
Another one of several historic and picturesque caches on Cape Ann
by Sisubuska
The Rockport Granite Company shipped millions of tons of cut granite stone and paving blocks from this pier on large schooners and stone sloops. A railroad was here to transport the stone from the quarries to the wharf (note the Flat Ledge Quarry in the ariel photo). The 65' arch Keystone Bridge just up beyond the cache was built in just 11 weeks in 1872 and uses no structural morter to support it. Today "THE PIER" is home to lobstermen and recreational boaters. The upper level of the pier (where there is another cache) offers a beautiful vista of Sandy Bay. The cache is a medium sized container with some trading items and would make a nice rest stop for traveling items. There are also some historic photographs in the gallery. PLEASE DONT LEAVE COMMENT AND PHOTO SPOILERS, Thanks........Enjoy!
