He met and became friends with Theodore Roosevelt and his friendship led to many court cases representing the federal government. He became known as "the trust buster" for his many victories in preventing corporate monopolies. He became president of the American Bar Association, became a Minnesota State Congressman and eventually became Secretary of State under President Calvin Coolidge. He was a success for "always striving to convey the spirit of American good will in foreign affairs."
