Geocache Description:

This cache will bring you to the Korumburra Showgrounds. You'll have to pick the right day to get free access.

Apart from being home to local netball, football and cricket, the venue hosts swap meets, working dog trials, equestrian events, expo's and the annual Korumburra show.

The history of this community facility dates back to 1892 when hotelier Antonio Radovick purchased 5 blocks of land, approx 9 acres, for £249. The land, which in those days was known as Radovick's Paddock, was cleared and "became the venue of sportsmen" (Mr Radovick reserved the right of the publicans booth for events). 1894 saw the venue host the first outdoor agricultural show, and the first meet of the Korumburra Racing Club. In 1898 it was sold to the trustees of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society of Korumburra.

Over the years, the venue has hosted a range of community and sporting events, the area has expanded, and had several facelifts. As you stand at GZ, you might imagine (or even remember) the old grandstand that was destroyed by fire in the 1980's, horses or speedway cars racing, woodchop events, the Karmai Festival, fireworks, the rodeo, or even the Mother Rock music festival from the mid 70's with bands including AC-DC, Skyhooks, Daddy Cool, Little River Band and Billy Thorpe live on stage.

As for the cache, well it's BYO pen, initials only on the log, and no room for swaps.

Depending on when you come, it could be a high muggle zone, or you may have the place to yourself. When the gates are open it is regularly used by those taking their 4 legged friends for a walk, or those accessing the skatepark that is in full view, or those training on the oval, or those parking their campervan for a short stay, or....... difficulty rating reflects this possibility. Be warned, if there is an event on in the clubrooms at night, then muggles could be sitting in the dark pavilion watching you.

Feel free to share your memories, and any pictures, when you post your log.

You might find that the gates at the highway entrance are locked. If that's the case, you can usually get access via the rear gates in Victoria St or Charles St. And a special attribute for those grey nomads that may want to set up base for a day or two, there is a dump point on site.

The books I used for historical info were: - Early Days of Korumburra by Keith Bowden - The History of the Shire of Korumburra by Joseph White If you google Mother Rock Korumburra, you'll find links to Skyhooks and AC/DC archives which have a bit of concert info.
