Blackbushe is well known for its military and civilian flight history, but its old runway has now played a part in the filming of the movie Rush.
Rush is directed by Ron Howard who is probably best known to people like me who were born in the 70s, for his role as an actor in Happy Days. He played Richie Cunningham alongside the Fonz.
Ron is a well established director though, having been responsible for Cocoon and Apollo 13 amongst others.
Rush is a movie of the dramatic 1976 Formula 1 season which saw James Hunt and Niki Lauda in a battle for the championship. This is back in the days when F1 was not the cure for insomnia it has become today!
The set was open whilst filming was taking place so as long as you were out of the way and off camera, you could wander around to your hearts content admiring the numerous period vehicles they had brought in. The set was designed to be versatile and moveable, so it was used to replicate Germany, the UK, Spain and even Japan. Reportedly the extras brought in for the Japanese scenes walked off set as they did not like the fake rain!
