This cache has been placed among some pieces of history and not too far from a few displaced geocaches. For those just seeking another cache, this is fairly plain, but it you're interested, there's some interesting history in the nearby structures.
The Works Progress Administration (WPA) that later became the Work Projects Administration was Roosevelt's largest agency under the New Deal of the 30s and 40s. The stonework at the entrance to the park still stands as evidence of the WPA with a 1938 plaque intact. The fireplace is gone.
The ovens and fireplace were the center point of Veterans' Memorial Park.
In 2007, the City of Kasson decided to tear down this structure to make way for their "state-of-the-art" shelter. I wasn't aware that a shelter could be state-of-the-art, but that was their attempt to calm the residents of Kasson.
The City's chief complaint about the fireplace was that it posed a safety hazard, as people could climb up and fall off. I wonder if they'll cut down the trees in the park too?
Come enjoy Veterans Memorial Park and it's history. The fireplace once held Squirrels on Fire. When the city destroyed the fireplace, that cache was replaced with Where's the Fireplace? When the city built a structure around that cache location, Fireplace Remembered was it's replacement. ...and when the City moved the gazebo to make way for the new Aquatic Center, this cache was born.
