Geocache Description:

Galveston Island State Park offers visitors a rare, intimate view of 2,000 acres of an upper gulf coast barrier island ecosystem. Barrier islands move and change constantly through the action of waves, winds and tides. Because barrier islands like Galveston serve as transition zones between land and ocean, they support a variety of distinct eco-regions, including beaches, prairies and wetlands.

The park contains a mosaic of coastal habitats that host a surprising variety of wildlife and is visited by birds from throughout the eastern hemisphere during spring and fall migration seasons. The beaches also protect the mainland from storms, while the lagoons, bay and salt marshes serve crucial functions in the life cycles of many ocean species.

Many of these organisms once sustained Karankawa Indians who foraged Galveston Island centuries ago. Spanish explorers later found refuge on the island. Although more recent development has brought many changes to the land known to the Karankawa, the park site still provides shelter for both people and wildlife.

The park has 180 overnight camping sites and 60 day-use sites. There are four miles of nature trails with an observation platform, boardwalks and photo blinds on the Galveston Bay side. Approximately a half million people visit Galveston Island State Park each year and you are one of them – welcome!

Cache is located temporarily on edge of park facing the gulf. There is no entry fee at this time. See notes for new temporary placement.
