We didn't start out planning to do a bridge series but it just sort of happened. You never know if the cache will be on, above, below or near. The caches will be named after bridges in our home state of Rhode Island and Sprague Bridge is in my hometown of Narragansett. This cache will bring you to a pretty spot with a nice walking path. Hopefully while here you will get to see a Great Blue Heron. Congrats to Night-Hawk and Sneakybulldog for the FTF!!
The Sprague Bridge was named for Governor William Sprague, the 27th Governor of Rhode Island and a US Senator. He was the last living senator who had served during the Civil War. While attending the Irving Institute in Tarrytown, New York, his father was murdered on New Year's Eve in 1843 in Knightsville, Rhode Island. The murder was considered a major event of the period, and the trial of accused killer John Gordon was marked by anti-Irish bigotry; Gordon was subsequently found guilty and executed. The original Governor Sprague Bridge, built in 1921, replaced a 100-foot covered bridge built in 1868. During the 1970s the Governor Sprague Bridge was replaced by the current bridge and roadway. The original bridge supports remain. This area is popular for fishing and boating. Kayakers can launch from the base of the bridge and head upriver for some calm paddling or head to the ocean. There is a cache located at the bridge so if you are ever in the area, take the time to stop, admire the scenery and find the cache.
