The following are some of the U.S. Presidents that have served in the military:
- Dwight D. Eisenhower’s entire active-duty career in the Army spanned from 1915-1969 (minus his 2 terms as president)
- A certain cherry tree chopping, wooden teeth wearing president by the name of George Washington served during the French and Indian War, as well as the American Revolutionary War.
- Franklin Pierce commanded an Infantry Brigade at the Battle of Contreras (where his leg was injured), Battle of Churubusco, and the Assault on Mexico City.
- Benjamin Harrison, during the American Civil War, commanded an Infantry Brigade at the battles of Resaca, New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Marietta, Peachtree Creek and Atlanta; also Commanded a Brigade during Sherman's March to the Sea.
- Forging into the American Civil War, James Garfield commanded an Ohio Infantry Brigade at the Battles of Shiloh and Corinth; served as Chief of Staff for General William Rosecrans at the Battle of Chickamauga; left the army to serve in the United States House of Representatives.
- Even having seen combat in the Navy on the USS Monterrey for 3 years (1942-1945), Gerald Ford (born in Omaha, NE), was discharged in 1946.
- In 2001, Theodore Roosevelt was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his service during the Spanish-American War.
- Each of Bush’s served in the military…Senior in the Naval Reserve, and Junior in the Texas Air National Guard.
- Even though he was technically never in the military, John Adams served as chairman of the Continental Congress's Board of War (1776–1777), making him the simultaneous equivalent of today's Secretary of Defense and Chairman of Senate Armed Services Committee; was a semi-participant in a naval engagement between a British and US ship during the American Revolution.
- Classified for limited service only due to his nearsightedness, Ronald Regan still found himself enlisting in the Army in 1937, even though he was excluded from serving overseas. Having begun his career as an actor, he used his past acting experience while assigned to the AAF Public Relations First Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, CA.
- Chester A. Arthur served as Quartermaster General before and during the American Civil War (1858–1865).
- In WWII, Lyndon B. Johnson earned a Silver Star medal after an airborne observation mission in which the aircraft he was on came under Japanese attack.
- His patriotism was displayed when Abraham Lincoln served as a Captain in the Illinois State Militia during the Black Hawk War.
This is the sixteenth cache in this series and it is dedicated to the men and women in the armed forces...and especially to those young men and women who have aspirations to join the active services once they enter their adult years.
Added 3/14/2016: BTCO was the owner of this military series of 26 caches either through the initial publication or through adoption. When he moved to Iowa he did not think he would be able to continue to properly maintain the series. As I had served 27 years in the Air Force he thought I would be a logical choice to assume the ownership of the series. I agreed with his assessment and I adopted the series from him.
