Dia 24 - Chegada a Calcutá
 Veio a noite e, no meio do uivar dos tigres, dos ursos e dos lobos que fugiam diante da locomotiva, o comboio passou a toda a velocidade e nada mais se pôde ver das maravilhas de Bengala, nem Golgonda, nem Gour em ruínas, nem Mourshedabad, que foi em outros tempos capital, nem Burdwan, nem Hougly, nem Chandernagor, ponto francês do território indiano sobre o qual Passepartout teria tido o orgulho de ver tremular a bandeira da sua pátria!
Finalmente, às sete da manhã, chegaram a Calcutá. O paquete, de partida para Hong Kong, só levantaria âncora ao meio dia. Phileas Fogg tinha, pois, cinco horas pela frente.
De acordo com seu plano este gentleman deveria chegar à capital da Índia em 25 de outubro, vinte e três dias após ter saído de Londres, e ali chegava no dia fixado. Não havia, pois, nem atraso nem avanço. Infelizmente, os dois dias ganhos por ele entre Londres e Bombaim tinham sido perdidos, sabemos como, na travessia da península indiana - mas é de supor que Phileas Fogg não os lamentasse.

Day 24 - Arrival in Calcutta
 The night has came, and in the midst of the howling of tigers, bears and wolves which fled before the locomotive, the train went at full speed and nothing else could be seen of the marvels of Bengal, nor Golgonda nor ruined Gour, or Mourshedabad, which was in former times the capital, or Burdwan, nor Hougly nor Chandernagor, French point of Indian territory on which Passepartout would have been proud to see the fluttering flag from his homeland.
Finally, at seven in the morning, they reached Calcutta. The ship, departing to Hong Kong, only would raise anchor at noon. Phileas Fogg had five hours ahead.
According to his plan this gentleman should reach the capital of India on October 25, twenty three days after leaving London, and there he arrived at the appointed day. There was therefore no delay or advancement. Unfortunately, the two-day gain for him between London and Bombay had been lost, as we know, in the crossing of the Indian peninsula - but it is assumed that Phileas Fogg did not regret them.
