Wolmarannstad is both a farming and diamond digging community
During the Anglo-Boer war the building was burnt down. After the war, the building was rebuild and used as the Drostdy until the late 1980's. The building was uninhabited for approximately 15 years and was left in ruins and a lurking-place for loiterers. After 15 years of negotiating, Gert and Wilna bought the premises in 1999 and they started restoration immediately. In 2000 Gert bought various vacant railway stations from around the country from Spoornet. Stations that no longer have trains stopping at them...the ones that have a cactus growing on their roof :) He transported them by road and erected them as out buildings at this location.
They also have an original “Slave Bell” in the car park – The Slave Bell was used to punctuate the day at the Cape Colony during the days when slavery was still practised there.
Gert the owner is a fascinating character with some wonderful stories of the "Old Wolmaransstad". Gert is by profession a pharmacist but turned to Brewer sometime back.
This was such an unexpected stop en route to Joburg and what a little gem of a place it is! Gert has some amazing stories to tell his fellow travellers...just the car park itself with all it's memorabilia is something!
Gert the owner and his wife Wilma are aware of the cache. They are intrigued by this world of geocaching! Share your stories with them :)
