Geocache Description:

A cache in the centre of town aiming to show you a little bit of Penriths history

The cache is placed just off the main street in Penrith town centre in a small area next door to the Tourist Information Centre – this 'leisure' area was created in 1978 by Penrith Civic Society by utilising the space left over from the old school yard of Robinsons School.

With no natural stream or river to supply water to Penrith, Thacka Beck - the stream behind the cache – was created to provide water for the town. A ditch 3 miles long was dug by hand from the River Petteril in 1382 under the orders of  Bishop Strickland. The amount of water allowed to be diverted for Penriths use was controlled as being ‘that which would flow through the eye of a millstone’. A millstone similar to the one used is in position very close to the cache.

The adjacent Tourist Information Centre and Museum is well worth a visit whilst you are here. Formerly a 300yr old school named after its founder and benefactor, William Robinson. Robinson's School closed in April 1971 after a long and interesting history dating back to the year 1670.

You are looking for a nano cache containing a log strip only and you will need to bring your own preferred writing implement. You may find a pair of tweezers help to remove the log and be warned - stealth will be required when retrieving the cache :-)
