Remembering Koolrat Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Trail Reader: The poison oak and thistles have died back, giving the area a more exposed look. I was able to thoroughly search and found nothing other than a few broken pieces of plastic that probably belonged to the container. With the original log pages missing and the area compromised, it is with a heavy heart that I request archival. Thanks to all who visited. Let's keep Koolrat alive in our memories!

Geocache Description:

In order to accommodate the footprint of my new night hike, I had to archive In Memory of Koolrat (GC20TFT). I have hidden this cache as a replacement, very near to one of his remaining caches, Not Exactly Yankee Stadium (GCYC6P). I would like to think that Koolrat would have approved.

In November 2009, the Monterey Bay Area lost one of its caching greats with the death of Jim Hough, known to us as Koolrat.

A geocacher since September 26, 2005, Koolrat was considered by locals to be the undisputed master of the bush hide. The owner of forty-eight caches, many of which were located in the treacherous scrub of the rolling hills of Fort Ord, Koolrat had so perfected the art of hiding a nearly-invisible cache that the words "camo'd Costco nut jar" would throw many of us into an instant state of despair. However, Koolrat's skill was actually a benefit to us all. Because of his talent with invisible hides, cachers were spared the indignity of the physical damage usually inflicted by the bush hide genre--venturing into the foliage was rarely necessary.

Like many others, I cut my geocaching teeth on Koolrat's hides. He will be sorely missed.

The container is a camouflaged plastic lock-n-lock filled with trade items, a pen, and a log. I have also enclosed the log pages from the original cache--there are some wonderful thoughts there. Please feel free to add your own.
