My son, Elliot celebrated his 8th birthday this week and, since we had managed to recycle a decent cache container, we thought it would be good to place a birthday cache in his favourite woods.
The woods are a great place to walk and ride bikes and with the newly tarmacked roads the use of scooters is possible too. The woods have had a colourful history.
During the Second world war the woods were a Royal Navy depot. After the war, two buildings were used to store emergency rations in case of Nuclear attack. Today many of these buildings are in ruin but two remain which (when you google buildings in Abbeyford Woods) appear on the list of properties owned by Devon and Cornwall Police as training centres.
Travelling south along the A30 take the first exit to Okehampton town centre and turn right at the first set of traffic lights (signposted North Road Industrial Estate). Turn right at the T-junction, then first left and follow the road to the top of the hill where you will find the main Abbeyford car park.
