Geocache Description:

Heading to Malby Crossing, El Dorado/Sacramento County Line

This stretch of the line was never officially part of the Sacramento Valley Railroad (SVR), but it was part of what the SVR morphed into. The original line ran from Sacramento to Folsom. For some reason the tracks were 7 inches wider than standard gauge, which was based on the Roman Chariot, sorry I digress. SVR began operation in 1856, which makes it the oldest rail line west of the Mississippi. The first president of SVR was William Tecumseh Sherman, yep the same guy who marched on Atlanta, several years later.

Several mergers and consolidations later SVR became the Sacramento and Placerville Railroad. Only to be acquired by the Northern Railway a subsidiary Southern Pacific (SP), and then by the Sp. Sometime in the late 1950s passenger rail service stopped along this line but lumber was being hauled down these tracks from Camino until 1986 on the Camino Placerville & Lake Tahoe Railroad.

Today the right of way belongs to Sacramento Placerville Transportation Corridor Joint Powers Authority, the El Dorado County section is open to the public from Camino to the El Dorado/Sacramento county line.

The right of way to the north & west of this crossing is officially in the public domain, as of this publishing it has not been opened to the public but to the south & east it is.

No need to go under the structure. Railroad spikes do not need to be pulled up, vegetation need not be uprooted, please write small and/or just use initials, other than the FTF who actually cares if you sign or not. The paper is waterproof but your signature may run. You will need your own writing device, have fun!!
