What is known today as the North Cascades Highway was originally the corridor used by local Native American tribes as a trading route from Washington's Eastern Plateau country to the Pacific Coast. The Highway is the first National Scenic Highway in the United States. The mountain scenic drive begins in Sedro Woolley and follows the green-blue Skagit River for most of the drive. The river is a popular whitewater rafting river and in the winter, dozens of bald eagles come here to feed on spawning salmon.
The highway also crosses Washington Pass at 5,477’and Rainy Pass at 4,860’. Pack a picnic and take any of a number of short hikes that start just off the highway. The alpine meadows all along this crest of the Cascades are resplendent with wildflowers in July and August.
