In 1875 a Methodist Church was founded in what is now known as the town of Pacific Grove. Pacific Grove back in the late 1800's and early 1900's was a popular summer religious retreat on the Monterey Peninsula. For the summer season many people from San Francisco and San Jose came by a railroad to the Pacific Grove campground. The remnants of the old track bed can still be seen along the bay and into parts of the town. Besides the camp meeting it was considered a healthful location, being next to the Monterey Bay as the air was so good to breathe. The people lived in canvas tents, many with a wooden floor. As a note, when looking at many homes in Pacific Grove, one can possibly see some with tent-like architecture. With the founding of the city of Pacific Grove the original wooden Victorian church was located downtown. The church had two spires and a revolving lighted cross that could be seen for miles at sea. Chautauqua Hall held the expanded meetings and the building is still in existance. An amphitheater held retreat services on the present sight of the Pacific Library. Many of the early pastors have been noted by the names of some of Pacific Grove's streets.

The present church was build in 1962 in a wooded area with Monarch butterflies commonly seen in their annual migrations. The church building architecture symbolizes a white canvas tent with its supporting ropes. The main windows of the church has the theme of the Monarch butterfly, as does the "Monarch orange" color of the supporting arches.
