It is said that two brothers Crispin and Crispian born in Rome travelled to Soissons France around A.D 288 to preach Christianity, they maintained themselves by making and repairing shoes, Crispin later was to become the patron saint of shoemakers. He is probably better known for St Crispins day Oct 25th the day of the battle of Agincourt (1415).
Shakespeare makes Crispin crispian one person, hence Henry V quotes to his army " and Crispin crispian shall ne'er go by...but we in it shall be remembered". History states that these two Saints suffered a dreadful death of torture, to horrible to state here, and eventually were beheaded. However! local tales here at this part of Greatstone ( stone end/stone point) has it that they escaped and came to England by boat but drowned and are supposedly buried somewhere on the beach among large rocks, however the beach over the centuries is probably now further away than it was then.
