Geocache Description:

ground is flat but lots of pot holes please do not take your car down this way but park in the carpark at the cricket club. Whilst here you can pick up my other cache SHEEPWATCH.

Lydd has long been associated with the military, ever since summer camps were set up in the mid 1700`s.
A permanent camp was established in 1879, since then most regiments of the british army have at some point been to lydd. Lyddite was tested here in 1888 (pitric acid explosive), as were the first trials of the flame thrower on the churchill tank in WW2.
This part of Lydd near to Dering farm was used for the flying of large Balloons and Kites, ( as was `The Rype`) it wasnt unusual for one to see large Kites and balloons with a man suspended in a basket underneath, These were called captive balloons and were usually used for observation purposes unless the wind was to strong when the kites would be used instead. The officer of th R.A. would ascend in the basket to observe the fall of the shell with reference to its target and report to the ground via field telephone.
The adviser to the british army on kites and balloons was Samuel Franklin Cody often mistaken for buffalo bill as he resembled him, he was born in Birdville Texas but became a naturalised briton, he adopted the rank of Colonel. He carried out many experiments on the balloons and kites and designed and built the first british airship that could be steered, he died in a plane he had designed and built in 1913.
Once you find the cache, stand facing the fence and look to the field to your right this is where the ballooning trails were, traces of concrete are scattered all over and the ROC hut still stands (just). This was also once a lookers hut!
