La Carte d’Arenberg
Document iconographique de toute première valeur cette carte représente la terre de Neufchâteau et le ban de Mellier avant la grande peste de 1636.
Le peintre a cherché à livrer une représentation fidèle de la seigneurie sous tous ses aspects;
le réseau hydrographique a été très bien relevé et le relief n’apparaît que pour marquer l’escarpement défensif du château de Neufchâteau et de l’église de Léglise.
A travers cette carte, le peintre a surtout esquissé le tableau d’une société bien structurée, qui n’a rien d’égalitaire : en place centrale du tableau on retrouve le seigneur dans toute sa puissance, avec son château, il est gigantesque et écrase la petite ville blottie à ses pieds, son gibet, sa nécropole. Les nobles et féodaux répartis dans les villages de la terre. Le clergé est rappelé par les couvents, les églises et les chapelles. Les habitants n’apparaissent qu’accessoirement pour animer les foires de Hamipré et Neufchâteau.

Iconografisch document van uierst hoge waarde stelt de-zer kaart het Land van Neufchâteau, de Ban van Mellier en het herendom van Bertrix voor vóór de grote pest van 1636 en de dertigjarige oorlog, die zovele dorpen vernield heeft. De schilder heeft een trouwe afbeeding van het herendom met al zijn aspecten willen geven Bij deze kaart heeft de schilder vooral het tafereel willen schetsen van een sterk gestructureerde gemeenschap, waar geen gelijkheid bestaat: in het middenpunt van het schilderij hebt u de heer in zijn almacht, met zijn Kasteel, het is reu-sachtig en steekt uit boven het stadje, dat aan zijn voeten ligt, het galgenveld, het kerkhof. De edelleiden en leenheren zijn in de dorpen van het Land verspreid. Met de kloosters, kerken en kapellen wordt naar de geestelijken verwezen. Heel bijkomstig komen ook de bewoners slechts in aanmerking te Hamipré en te Neufchâteau te doen bestaan.

the map of Arenberg
This map represents the "land of Neufchâteau" and the "ban Mellier" before the great plague of 1636. The artist delivered an accurate representation of the lordship in all its aspects. The drainage system has been well raised and the relief appears to mark the defensive Escarpment of Neufchâteau's castle and of Léglise's church. With this card, the artist sketched a picture of a well-structured society that has nothing egalitarian in the central position of the table we find the Lord in all his power, with its castle, it is huge and crushes the small town nestled at his feet, his gallows, his necropolis. The feudal and noble distributed in the villages of the earth. The clergy are reminded by the monasteries, churches and chapels.
