Geocache Description:

Small plastic tube containing log only.

Please bring your own pen or pencil to log.

A small group of caches to mark the 50th anniversery of the cessation of passenger traffic on the Yatton to Witham line, known as the Strawberry Line, on Saturday 7th September 1963. The official date of closure was 9th September 1963 as no passenger trains ran on Sunday so Monday 9th would have been the next working day.

Lodge Hill Station was just to the north of  Westbury Sub Mendip. It was named Lodge Hill to stop any possible confusion with Westbury station 30 miles away in Wiltshire.

The station opened on 5th April 1870 with the opening of the Cheddar to Wells section of the Cheddar Valley and Yatton Railway.

The station closed to goods traffic on 10th June 1963.

Passenger tickets were 10,854 in 1903 but dropping to 5,575 in 1933.

Today the goods shed still remainsd on the Lodge Hill industrial park. The station has been demolished. Some of the materials though were used at Cranmore station in the construction of a new building there.
