Gumboot Song
John Clarke, as Fred Dagg, shot to fame in New Zealand in 1975. The Gumboot Song, released in 1976 and reaching no 6 on the sales charts, cemented his position as a Kiwi icon. By 1979 he had left the country looking for greener pastures (ironically he went to Australia!). Looking back it seems incredible that the Fred Dagg character was around for such a short time, given the huge impression he left on a generation of kiwis.
