Geocache Description:

I am proud to present the first cache in Kuils River.

For the past 13years this place has been my home.Out of all the places I have been in kuilsriver this is my favorite spot to stop and just enjoy the view.I could come here any time of day and still enjoy it although sunset or at night would be the best time.I hope you can enjoy it as mush as I do.

Park any where on the grass, just watch out for the holes.

Here is some History.

Originally known as De Cuylen, Kuilsriver has a rich history, steeped in Dutch heritage and unlike other suburbs in Cape Town, is a relatively young municipality, only gaining municipal status in 1950. Even though it became a village in the 18th century there are still plenty of open spaces which are becoming increasingly popular amongst property developers in cape town.

The Dutch East India Company saw the potential in this little town back in the 1600’s and it soon became a cattle farm before becoming a staging post for travellers on their way to Stellenbosch. Only an hour horse ride outside of Cape Town made it the perfect retreat from the even then, hustle and bustle of town and many residents decided to set up home on many of the large farmsteads – many of which can still be seen today.

Today, Kuilsriver is notorious for being the start of the Stellenbosch Wine Route as a well known Wine Estate sits proudly on its doorstep. These wine farms are testament to the areas heritage as a rich farmland as well as wide open spaces. In fact, many of the cow passing’s are still prominent throughout the area – paths that were formed by cattle back in the 1600’s – forming a path for the future farmers in the area.

The area is also rich in church buildings that harken back to a time of parishes and evidence of this can be seen in much of the architecture in the area. Many commercial property developers are seeing the potential in the area and are utilising the quiet area and its reputation as gateway to one of the most beautiful wine paths in the world to their advantage – providing more people with the opportunity to live in one of the earliest established areas in the Western Cape.

Please bring your own pen and replace the cache as found to avoid being detected by unwanted muggles.

Congratulations to strandloper3 for the FTF and thank you for the interesting log you left.
