Historic Camp Remington is owned by the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota on land leased since 1922 from the Black Hills National Forest. Originally operated as a vacation place for clergy and their families, Camp Remington has been preserved as a place for anyone to enjoy the beauty and quiet of the Black Hills. Camp Remington is within the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve of the Black Hills National Forest, adjacent to the Black Elk Wilderness. Located one mile off the Needles Highway, 6 miles south of Sylvan Lake and 3 miles north of the Black Hills Playhouse. Within easy driving are Keystone and Mount Rushmore. In addition to the three diocesan-owned cabins, there are eight privately owned cabins (many still owned by descendants of former clergy) clustered nearby which are also part of Camp Remington. Every summer since 1922, Episcopal Church services have been held in Camp Remington’s quaint and historic open-air Chapel of the Transfiguration. Holy Eucharist or Morning Prayer is at 10:30 AM on all Sundays in July through Labor Day. Persons of all faith backgrounds are welcome to use the cabins and attend the services if they choose. By a long-standing tradition, as the priests are on vacation, no sermon is offered. As one of our bishops once said, “If you feel the need for a sermon, just be silent and look around you at the beauty of the Hills.” As a sign above our altar window says, The Strength of the Hills is His Also.
