SOLUTION PIPES
The theory for tube formation goes like this.on this island sand blew into large dunes up to 100 metres above sea level. The features are solution pipes formed through the exposure of the local limestone capstone rock to weak acidic solutions. The dissolved limestone (calcium carbonate) in the solution seeps through a sand dune and cements it together to form a hard pipe. The dune formation becomes rock. Subsequent erosion removes the soft rock around the pipe. What is left looks like the petrified trunk of a tree.
to log a find you will need to:
- tell me what stage you think the solution pipes are, eg. forming or eroding.
- OPTIONAL post a photo of you, your GPS and a broken off solution pipe
- tell me your estimated height of the cliff.
tell me if the solution pipes are hollow and if the are the average dimension of them.
you should include all this information in an email to me.
feel free log this cache straight after you have sent the email and mention it in your email if you want a reply.
