The Roman altar is fenced off now, but has been here for almost two thousand years. Legend has it that Robert the Bruce planted his standard in the hole in it, before the Battle of Bannockburn. The stone takes its name from him, the Earl of Carrick. And then just 50m or so along the path is a trig point. I’ve never seen a trig point in such a built-up area before, and of course it was here long before the houses appeared in the early 1990s. Between them, I bet the Carrick Stone and trig point could tell a few stories.
This cache is one of several we’ve hidden in or near Cumbernauld Community Park. They’re all reached from well-maintained paths, with the final 10-20m being rougher going. Why not link up the caches and enjoy a walk through this huge green space right in the middle of town?
