Geocache Description:

Welcome to Devil's Lake State Park. Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited with more than 1,500,000 visitors a year.

Entrance into Wisconsin State Parks requires a pass. Either a one-day pass or an annual pass can be purchased at the park or online at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/admission

DEVIL'S LAKE STATE PARK

This State Park offers magnificent views from 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. Enjoy lake shore picnic areas, sandy swimming beaches, 29 miles of hiking trails, or ease into the back country solitude. Devil's Lake is a beautiful year-round park with an intriguing natural history along the 1,000-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Devil's Lake is a beautiful glacial lake surrounded on three sides by 500 foot high, pink Baraboo Quartzite bluffs. Enjoy hiking along the many miles of trails, including a portion of the Ice Age Trail. Mountain biking is allowed on some of the trails, and you will get a workout. Maximun lake depth is only 43-48 feet, but the lake is great for swimming, fishing, and boating (no motors allowed). Open all year, camping is available in three campgrounds during the summer and one in the winter.

Be sure to check out the Nature Center for geological and human history exhibits and nature programs. GPS units are available for check out from as well as snowshoes in the winter to get off trail and enjoy the beauty of the area.

Adjoining the Park to the south is the former 7,275 acre Badger Army Ammunition Plant, constructed in 1942. Now, after clean-up of the lands, a portion is being transferred to the WDNR. So far 2,170 acres have been transferred, and they have begun the process of master planning for the new Sauk Prairie Recreation Area.

SS

Southern Savannah Biome

This region, the bottom middle of the state, is characterized by remnants of the once predominant oak savanna biome.  A savannah will have a low plant density, allowing for grassland development under the open canopy of forest dominated by oak.  These landscapes are often described as “park like” due to their open appearance and with development, are disappearing from their original boundaries.  Red-Headed Woodpeckers and Wild Turkey are birds that depend on this kind of biome, and of course Whitetail Deer are seen throughout the area, as are raccoons, squirrels and small rodents.

WISCONSIN GEOCACHING ASSOCIATION

The Wisconsin Geocaching Association (WGA) is a group of geocachers dedicated to promoting and protecting geocaching within the state of Wisconsin. The WGA organizes geocaching events, works with land owners/managers on geocaching policies, educates the public at large about geocaching, and facilitates communication between WGA members. To learn more about the WGA visit: www.wi-geocaching.com

2013 kicks off the beginning of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association State Parks series. It is our goal to place a geocache in every state park in the state of Wisconsin so watch out for more in this series that encourages geocachers to explore the natural resources in this beautiful state of ours.

The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to
Devil's Lake Park Superintendent Steve Schmelzer. Geocaches placed on Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource managed lands require permission by means of a notification form.
