The Church of St Oswald is situated in the tiny Yorkshire Dales village of Hauxwell. Hauxwell is little more than a hamlet but it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. It is believed that the church once stood in the centre of the village but after the plague the houses were rebuilt further away. It is situated next to the large manor house, Hauxwell Hall. It is not known for certain who built the church and when but we do know that in a charter dated 1125 - 35, the church was given to St Mary's Abbey, York by Stephen, Count of Brittany. The first half of the 13th century saw a considerable amount of reconstruction. The chancel was doubled in length, making it unusually long compared to its width. The chancel and the nave are separated by a long, low, narrow arch. A side (possibly chantry) chapel was built in the 14th century, and the main body of the church has remained largely unchanged in shape since then. The tower was originally 50 feet high but this was doubled in the late 16th century. The Pattison family arrived at St Oswald's in 1825 when Mark James Pattison became Rector. In 1832 his daughter Dorothy Windlow Pattison was born in Hauxwell. She became a Church of England nun and chose to be known as Sister Dora, Dora being her childhood nickname. She devoted the rest of her life to nursing, and was particularly noted for her work with people who had sustained industrial injuries. Her pioneering work in this field has been compared with that of Florence Nightingale; Sister Dora is widely believed to have been as important in the work she did with those injured in industrial accidents as Florence Nightingale did in her work in the field hospitals in war times. The Daily Telegraph paid tribute to her by saying, "...what Florence Nightingale did for military hospitals, Dorothy Pattison accomplished in the sphere of civic duty." “If anybody would like to expand this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list ”
