Geocache Description:

COVE MILLS

Image © Stamford Historical Society

On this site in 1791, William Fitch and John W. Holly built a dam that trapped the waters of this cove to erect a tide-water grist mill. Its success spawned a second mill nine years later to separate "Cove Island" from mainland Connecticut. With prime real estate along the Long Island Sound, these two mills were only the beginning of what would become a large piece of Stamford history.

As 19th-Century Industrial Revolution swept across the country, brothers John and Henry Sanford saw opportunity at the Cove and invested money towards partnering with Holly; later building what would become The Stamford Manufacturing Company after Holly's death in 1844. This group of mills processed chemicals into colored dyes and licorice. Business thrived through the turn of the 20th Century until productivity slowed during the first World War. Unfortunately for Cove Mills, it never returned and when a fire claimed this site in early 1919 it was decided to not rebuild what had already been lost.

Cove Island Park is currently owned by the City of Stamford. You'd never guess the photo above used to be where the park stands today. Some ruins from Cove Mills are still present throughout, including an old foundation located just beyond the posted coordinates. It's a popular destination for numerous activities and has spectacular harbor views. There is also a wildlife sanctuary that features bird watching and a small system of trails. It is along these trails where this cache will be found.

Note: As with many Connecticut shoreline parks, there are charges for parking May 1 - September 30 whenever the booth is manned. No charge for admission. If you choose to walk, street parking is available uphill from the park entrance.

Enjoy!
