Lest We Forget, Bradford (v2) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not repaired it I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to email me please send your email via my profile (click on my name) and quote the cache name and number.

Geocache Description:

A replacement for the original "Lest We Forget, Bradford" cache near the War Memorial in the centre of Bradford, West Yorkshire

About the Cache Location

Erected in 1922 the war memorial is a cenotaph shape of local stone (from Bolton Woods quarry) flanked by two bronze figures of a sailor and a soldier thrusting their rifles forward.
The sculptures originally included fixed bayonets which were considered too agressive for a memorial and suffered vanadlism up to the 1960's when the monument was cleaned and the bayonet blades were removed.

The memorial was dedicated to the 37,000 locals who were killed in the Great War 1914-1918, its dedication on the 6th aniversary of the first day of the battle of the Somme (1st July 1922) was attended by aproximately 40,000 people, (3,000 more than those lost) filling the whole basin area outside Bradford City Hall.

The 'First Bradford Pals' of the West Yorkshire Regiment were the first troops to advance over the top in the first hour of the battle of the Somme, loosing 1770 of their 2000 men in that first hour. Hence the title of the cache.

The Cache

The cache is a magnetic 35mm film canister. I have replaced the cache with a magnetic nano

If you have any relatives who served in the Great War by all means commemorate them in your log entry. The cache is not meant as a roll of honour, but their sacrifice is always worthy of rememberence.

The cache is a bring your own pencil cache.

The cache location has now been updated due to changes to the area by the council.
