The pasture beside the cemetery used to be the home of our grandfather’s cows in the spring, summer and fall. The cows are no longer here as the last remaining farm in the City of Rockland was officially shut down. The cows have been sold and no longer have this beautiful view to take in. You can find our grandfathers stone here so that he can still enjoy the pasture – look for Harvey Curtis.
Many years ago, the cemetery was grown up and beat up. Stones were broken and mold had developed on them. The bushes were high and the place was not taken care of. Charlie and Donna Godfrey (our parents) took the time and the money and hard labor and worked on cleaning it up. They put stones back up right, they found where stones needed to be, they bushwhacked so each person there had their special spot and they cleaned the stones in order for other people to be able to read them and honor them. When Dad passed away and was buried here (look for his stone too), mom had a rod iron fence built to add to the character of the cemetery. She continues to care for the wonderful place and she is excited for others to enjoy the cemetery and the views of the pasture.
Congrats to waterski for the FTF. And thanks for the great write up.
P.S. 2025 edit - if you notice that the cemetery has not been mowed or taken care of, my mom has been told that she can no longer do this - per the cemetery committee of the Town of Thomaston. There have been numerous write ups about this that you could google. Hopefully, you will find the cemetery in good shape when you visit. :)
