Geocache Description:

The oldest remains of the castle of Kyrenia date back to the 7th Century. The fortress was first extended by the Byzantines in the 10th Century and by the Venetians in the 16th Century both in conflict with the Ottomans. Afterwards the castle was used as a prison and finally was transformed in into a tourist attraction with several museums, including the Shipwreck Museum.

some_text
The fort is surrounded by a wide moat. The entrywalls with ascending ramps is designed spacious and with a lot of angles. In the courtyard you can find the Byzantine St George's chapel from the 12th Century with his prayer room equipped with high Corinthian columns. Behind the entry the tomb of the Turkish Admiral Sadik Pasha can bee seen († 1570 before Kyrenia). The Venetian tower has an exposition of make-through images (Dioramas) with costumed dolls showing the life of the guards of the castle. The shipwreck museum contains the original of an ancient cargo vessel, which became 'the' famous ship of Kyrenia, which was covered in 1969 off the coast.
