Rocky Road, or the Stone Slabs Street, are commonly known names by locals referring to Pottinger Street in Central, Hong Kong. The street is a slanted pedestrian walkway of granite stone slabs. It was named after the first Governor of Hong Kong – Mr. Henry Pottinger, in 1857.
The street was originally built on the slope between Queen’s Road Central and Hollywood Road. The stone slabs design had a skid-resistant function to facilitate walking, while allowing rainwater to flow down along the sides. In the days before the nearby mid-levels escalator was built, anyone who didn’t fancy walking uphill would have ridden in a sedan chair. In 1993-1996, the Central Reclamation Phase had extended the length to Connaught Road Central. Yet the extended part is not as steep as the upper part, and it was not built by stones.
Being one of the characteristic streets in Hong Kong with long history and special features, the Rocky Road is a popular place for wedding photographs and movie shoots. During day time, you can also find many old fashioned green cabins alongside, selling accessories and groceries.
Please place the cache in exact position as you find it.
