Stow is a small rural village in the heart of the Scottish Borders. It might be small (600 people) but it has a rich history it wants to share. This geocache is one of five on an easy walk around the village. This geocache brings you to the Royal Hotel at the heart of the village.
The street you stand on at the geocache site is called Townfoot and this is the centre of Stow today. The route of the A7 was opened in 1818 and replaced the old turnpike road on the other side of the Galawater in importance. With the opening of the new road the post office was transferred from Stagehall to Townfoot and a coaching inn was built to serve the travellers at the north end of Stow. The opening of the railway in 1849 led to the building of the Station Hotel across the road from where you are standing. In the 1930s until the present day the hotel was called The Royal Hotel. Use your smartphone to scan the code and listen to a memory from the 1940s. The Royal Hotel is now no more - it was demolished on the day of the Royal Wedding in 2011.
The cache is is in the middle of the village so take care no muggles take an interest in what you are doing! This cache is also part of a printed treasure hunt trail for non-GPS users so there may be entries in the logbook that are not geocache logs.
