Jakarta still lacks open spaces, especially parks and recreational areas. Menteng, Central Jakarta's posh neighborhood, has finally completed its beautification of Taman Menteng (Menteng Park), first inaugurated on April 28th, 2007. This particular park has a slightly different concept from the other parks. The park has more than 30 species of plants and is also furnished with several supporting facilities such as children's playground, futsal and basketball courts. The Jakarta Metropolitan Government spent 30 billion Rupiah to build this park that boasts two glass houses as multipurpose areas for holding exhibitions and other events.
Prior to the erection of Taman Menteng, the site was home to the Jakarta soccer club, an old soccer stadium erected in 1921 by two Dutch architects. Due to a lack of maintenance, the stadium deteriorated in time and began to attract many illegal small-scale businesses. As a result, Jakarta's Governor at the time took the initiative, turning this public area into a city park.
