The Western Cape Lowlands, in which the critically endangered Cape Flats Sand Fynbos is found, is a very threatened habitat. Less than 1% this vegetation type is statutorily conserved as small patches in the Table Mountain National Park and private conservation areas.
Plattekloof Natural Heritage Site exists today only because of the high voltage power line servitude that transverses a densely populated urban environment, and was declared South Africa’s first Natural Heritage Site in 1985.
