Geocache Description:

Cache is an unusual container, Medium to large size. Located on the A487 near Dyfi- Furnace, it's at a large lay-by, and not on private land . Swaps inside, will be good if related to fire or heat but no worries if not, check out the other compartment ! There is small bank to climb, and a bit of uneven ground near cache.

You are not far from Dyfi Furnace described as a picturesque old relic from Wales' industrial past. The furnace there was originally constructed around 1755 for smelting iron ore; needing temperatures of over 1.000 centigrade, the huge waterwheel has been restored and is viewable today. Nearby is Ynyshir RSPB nature reserve with visitor centre. So this place was well used to fires and heat….BUT, very near here on the hill just above this site a very long time ago, there is another story about fire! Megan Twig was an orphan, she was found in the woods nearby as a baby, well there were not many people here at this time so Megan Twig was adopted by Hazel and Rowan. This was not very practical as they were both trees. But very kind and loving trees they were, and they taught Megan what they could about life. (Forgot to mention at this time there was much magic around, and still is if you know where and how to look!). Many creatures helped Hazel and Rowan to raise Megan, including fairies, elves and an Irish Gnome called Barrie. They built her a house of straw and wood and there she lived happily with many amazing friends that she loved, and she would cook a tasty meal for them. Creatures came miles to taste her dishes, and especially her stone and seaweed pie, and her bone and soil quiche. But one summers evening something terrible happened, while making a superpooperduper supper of frogs teeth, Crows beans soaked in bee’s milk a spark from the fire leapt in the air and as if directed by some wicked force and went into the straw roof and a fire started! She was horrified; she called for help as the fire took hold. In came Mr McBushytail a local squirrel ( with a Scottish grandfather), then Myfanwy rook and even a small pony who no one knew, but they could do nothing, Hazel and Rowan were watching, they could do nothing either just rooted to the ground, the fire began to spread moving into the forest! They needed water from the river nearby….Hazel and Rowan did the only thing they could, they called in their loudest tree voice to all the other trees and bushes…’ CALL FOR BARRIE…..CALL FOR BARRIE, this was passed on through the forest until Barrie who was fishing for a new pair of shoes. (Well he found a nice pair of shoes in the river once and thought there must be more there) Once Barrie heard what was happening, he did not panic. Irish Gnomes could be silly sometimes but they were brave and knew what to do in a forest fire situation. He ran to the nearest bucket makers Mr and Mrs Pail and their 15 children, who unfortunately had just left the area because there was no demand for their buckets, and they had taken all their stock with them except for one old bucket with a broken handle! Barrie dropped his head for a moment, but then the idea came to him, yes, yes! He said to himself and ran like the wind into the woods away from the river! The fire raged and everyone was waiting for the worst, Hazel and Rowan felt the heat, Megan shouted to them how she loved them for all they had done….and then…..at the last moment appeared Barrie, with yes, you guessed it, a bucket of Potatoes!!! Err! Potatoes?? But don’t worry he had been to see his cousin Seamus and it was a bucket of magic potatoes, he threw them at the fire and each one exploded like a small lake, water was everywhere, everyone got soaked but it didn’t matter because the forest was saved. Hurrah for Barrie and Megan, Hazel, Rowan and all…………Fire - dangerous isn’t it ; )))
