Geocache Description:

You are looking for a cache that highlights the many committees of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association. The size is not listed as it is not a typical hide (no spoilers please). You’ll need to bring your own pen. Depending on the direction of approach you may find some stinging nettle in some areas, so pants recommended if you don't know what it looks like.

The Wisconsin Geocaching Association (WGA) is a group of fun-loving outdoor-minded folks dedicated to promoting geocaching within the state of Wisconsin. The WGA organizes geocaching events, works with land owners/managers on geocaching policies, educates organizations, the public at large, and their own membership about geocaching, and facilitates communication between WGA members via their website, events, and newsletters.

A Bit of History
The first organized geocaching event in Wisconsin (predating the WGA) was the SE Wisconsin Geocachers Picnic and Hunt held August 26, 2001 at Pike Lake near Hartford, Wisconsin. Shortly afterward the name “Wisconsin Geocaching Association” was chosen, which was more representative of the entire state, and the WGA was formalized by adopting bylaws and forming the first elected board of directors, all volunteers. The bylaws call for a total of nine board members serving two-year staggered terms.

As the WGA continued to grow, committees were formed to work with the BOD to expand involvement opportunities for the WGA membership, and to improve programs, events, and services to the Wisconsin geocaching community. Some committees are ongoing, and some are formed for short term specific tasks or goals.

The Committees
The following is a list of the five main committees of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association:

1. The campout committee includes all 9 members of the WGA Board of directors and up to 9 other members of the WGA. The campout committee starts new each February, and dissolves 3 weeks after the annual campout is held. The campout committee has a folder at the WGA website for use in decision making, communication, and task assignment. The campout committee will hold at least one face to face meeting approximately 3 weeks (plus or minus a week) prior to the campout at the location of the campout for final planning, recognizance and cache placement.

2. The picnic committee includes all 9 members of the WGA Board of directors and up to 9 other members of the WGA. The campout committee starts new each June, and dissolves 3 weeks after the annual picnic is held. The picnic committee has a folder at the WGA website for use in decision making, communication, and task assignment. The picnic committee will hold at least one face to face meeting approximately 3 weeks (plus or minus a week) prior to the picnic at the location of the picnic for final planning, recognizance, and cache placement.

3. The web committee includes 2-4 members of the Board of Directors and up to 6 other members of the WGA. The web committee is a permanent committee of the WGA. The web committee has a folder at the WGA website for use in decision making and discussion with the web master(s). The primary mission of the web committee is to assist the web master(s) and the Board of Directors to maintain and improve the WGA website.

4. The community education committee includes 2-4 members of the Board of Directors and up to 9 other members of the WGA. The community education committee is a permanent committee of the WGA. The community education committee has a folder at the WGA website for use in decision making, communication, and arranging for community education programs. The primary mission of the committee is to advance awareness and understanding of geocaching within Wisconsin. Part of this mission includes the development and implementation of basic geocaching training programs.

5. The membership committee includes 2-4 members of the Board of Directors and up to 9 other members of the WGA. The membership committee is a permanent committee of the WGA. The membership committee has a folder at the WGA website for use in decision making, communication, and arranging for membership growth and assistance programs. The primary mission of the committee is to advance awareness and understanding of the WGA among Wisconsin geocachers and grow the membership of the WGA. Part of this mission includes the development of regional events to attract new members and the development and implementation of advanced geocaching training programs for new geocachers to help them grow in their enjoyment of the game.

New committees are formed as the need arises. Any new committee that is created needs to have a designated expected life expectancy, a well-defined mission, a description of number of members expected to serve on the committee and at least two Board members on the committee.

We are hoping that many WGA members will consider volunteering in some capacity, whether just for a day helping out at an event (the annual campout, the annual picnic, pancake breakfast, geocaching 101 event or continuing education event, etc.), or serving on a committee. If interested in helping out at a WGA event or on a WGA committee, you can contact any of the friendly folks on the WGA board of directors at (visit link)

Membership
It’s easy to join the WGA, and membership is free. Just register on their website at http://www.wi-geocaching.com. The WGA website is one of the best resources for geocachers in Wisconsin. It is a great place to find and share information on any aspect of geocaching. Come share, ask questions, download resources, or just socialize in their online forums!

For us personally, we have benefited from joining and participating in the WGA. It has expanded our awareness of so many more aspects of the game of geocaching as well as of Wisconsin, and has connected us to so many great people!

Help Spread The Word
If you are already a WGA member, why not help "spread the word" about the association to other Wisconsin geocachers you interact with. Also, please consider placing a WGA banner image and link to the WGA website on your own cache pages. It's easy! You can get the HTML code to copy and paste by visiting the Cache Banners Page.
