Litle Ogeechee Baptist Church has a long history in Screven County Georgia. The first pastor of the church, William Cone, swam his horse across the Ogeechee River to reach the "meeting house" because there were no bridges to travel on. In the early days of the church the men took guns to church in case of an Indian attack.
Later, during Sherman's March to the Sea, the church cemetery was used for a corral for the herded stock that the Army of the North had confiscated. All of the gravestones were destroyed and only one could be reassembled. It stands today and reads "Sarah Jackson, wife of George Jackson".
Today there is no danger from Indians, the members travel by modern vehicles to attend and there is no agressive army looking for a place to store confiscated livestock. Little Ogeechee Church members worship in peace and carry on the basic traditions that founded the church in 1790.
