Late in the nineteenth century the Screven County Courthouse stood in the center of town as a white frame building with a courtroom downstairs and county offices on the second floor. A county official became concerned about fire in such a structure and convinced the commmissioners to build a small brick annex on the south side. In January of 1897 the courthouse did burn down and the county records, already stored in the little brick building, were saved. The Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Development Authority offices now reside in "the old clerk's office".
