Geocache Description:

Cache resides near the Texas Historical Marker about the Cibolo Crossing on the Gonzales Road. No need to jump any fences. Cache resides on the fence and has been placed with permission of the property owner.

Texas history is one of my interests. Patrick and Linde Meyer were researching the land title of their ranch, and Patrick researched the title back to the original land grant from the Mexican government to Erastus "Deaf" Smith using the Texas General Land Office web site, www.glo.texas.gov. There he found the complete original land grant deed dated 1833. The deed includes the surveyor's field notes and a hand drawn map of the land grant including the route of the historic road from San Antonio de Bexar to Gonzales. The surveyor was Byrd Lockhart, who was also the surveyor who laid out this road for the Mexican government. This makes the location of the road route indisputable as both the map and the route were authored by the same person. The Cibolo Crossing is clearly indicated on the map, and this crossing still offers a very convenient place to cross the Cibolo Creek.
