The Texas Spirit Quest
is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries, tombstones and local lore.
PLEASE NOTE: The cache is NOT at the cemetery!
There are as many as 47 interments at this site (a prominent online resource lists 48, but at least one person is listed twice), ranging from 1869 to (allegedly) 2013. I am mildly dubious about that 2013 date, since the next most recent burial here took place in 1951. For the most part, it is members of the Denson family that are found here.
The site (shown as the Denison Cemetery on some maps) CAN be accessed, in theory, by following the rightmost dirt lane on the north side of the paved road (right across from the cemetery sign). You'd have to drive a few hundred feet down the track and wend over to the right. At a certain point, there's an opening in the fence to the east, and a separate route goes downhill across a cattle guard into a pasture. The cemetery is down that way. However, the fence is festooned with No Trespassing signs at that point, and online advisories indicate that a gate may sometimes be locked, and that it's best to ask permission before sallying forth. Therefore, the cache is all the way out by the initial entrance. At any rate, as always, any refinements to the listed coordinates are welcomed.
