Recently a local charity decided to YARN BOMB a very large Jacaranda tree outside their Hillcrest premises. All their fund-raising crafters were taught how to crochet and then commissioned to make 20cm by 20cm squares. These squares were sewn together and then wrapped around the tree! In 3 weeks they paid out over R150 000 to the crafters and the result was one of the most beautiful trees in Africa! The Tree got lots of media attention and brought in new customers. It also created a new income stream, with corporates and local businesses contracting them to YARN BOMB their premises.
"YARN BOMBING, is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk" from Wikipedia
