This is our first cache and has been placed to coincide with our little boy, Nathan’s, 2nd birthday on 24th September 2013. At the time of placing, the cache contained a TB with a personalised `dummy clip’ attached and lots of swaps similar to those found in party bags, in keeping with the birthday theme.
The Gillies is situated close to the centre of Fareham and is owned by Fareham Borough Council. The site is sandwiched between two railway lines to the north and south and is bounded by the Gosport Road to the east. The site has a great variety of wildlife, with oak and alder woodlands and an area saltmarsh where the stream flows into Fareham Creek. There are two areas of grassland - one mown short for informal public use; the other is managed as a conservation meadow for wildflowers, butterflies and birds.
The cache is located to the east of the wooded area accessible via a couple of different routes – either directly from The Gillies by following the footpath underneath the footbridge or via Briarwood Close, a nearby residential area.
If you are driving, parking is available at the Gillies pay and display car park just off West Street (near to Aldi’s) otherwise there is limited free parking at Briarwood Close, or for a longer walk at Paxton Road. Please note these two roads are residential areas so please park sensibly and with consideration for the local residents.
Unfortunately this is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs due to some uneven footpaths and steps on approach. There is a stream nearby so please keep a close eye on any young children visiting the site.
Please also be aware that this is a popular route for dog walkers and local children so stealth will be required, particularly at the weekends.
You are looking for a clip-lock box placed inside a camo bag. Please ensure you replace the log so that the bag cannot be seen from the path. Cache has been placed with the kind permission of Fareham's Countryside Rangers.
This is our first cache so any constructive comments are welcome.
Happy hunting!
