There are seven species of swans in the world, all pure white except for the Australian black swan and the South American black-necked swan.
Although the black swan was introduced as a game bird from Australia in the 1860’s, it is also thought that they probably reached New Zealand naturally at about the same time. Whilst many believe that they shouldn’t be classed as a native New Zealand bird, there is evidence building up to suggest that they are still arriving here from Australia naturally.
