During the War Between the States, many small forts were built to defend strategic crossroads to help in the defense of the Confederate capital. One of these forts is in Mathews County, and became known as ‘Fort Nonsense.”
Several hundred men built Fort Nonsense under the supervision of Mr. W. Dawson Soles. The fort failed, twice in fact. Mr. Soles, who visited the fort after soldiers had wrecked it, remarked, My! What a piece of nonsense! – and the fort had its name.
The current park before you was completed in 2013, and is now a very nice gateway to Mathews County
