L’origine du nom « Bragards »
Les habitants de Saint-Dizier s’appellent les Bragards. Selon la tradition populaire, ce nom viendrait d’une exclamation de François 1er : « Ah, les braves gars ! » voire même « Ah, les bragards ! » pour « les gaillards », en apprenant la résistance de la ville en 1544. Une étude toujours en cours nous dévoile que le terme « bragard » était fréquemment usité à cette époque. Il serait issu du mot « braies », le pantalon gaulois. Il signifierait à la fois « braillard et courageux ».

Durant la campagne de 1814, l’Empereur séjourna à l’actuel n° 60 de la rue Dr Mougeot. Il sortit vainqueur à Saint-Dizier et pour la dernière fois avant la campagne de Belgique en 1815.
